Well, I survived the first day of kindergarten! To be honest, that may sound really self-centered, but I knew Jack would be fine. He was excited to head on down to the bus stop and didn't even whine about how heavy his backpack was! The great thing was that our next door neighbor has a little boy who was also going into kindergarten so they sat on the bus together. It was so sweet to see them both waving to us as they left! And then I had to wait a long 8 hours to hear about his day....
The bus came half an hour late to bring him home (gotta love the first day!), and I guess it was because they'd forgotten the kids? I don't know. It's hard to understand the world through a five-year-old's mind. He was very excited to tell me about his day, but I'm really not sure what he did. I know from my own experience that the first day is usually just full of procedures and doesn't entail a ton of fun things, but I kept waiting to hear something concrete that he did aside from a couple of coloring pages and playing on the playground. Then again, this is kindergarten!
As a parent, here are the things I did NOT like to hear about his day: he left his lunch on the bus this morning (my poor baby!), he didn't remember his teacher's name and didn't know where to go (lost!), and a child was sent to the principal for hitting the teacher. (Seriously?? On the first day??). Here is what I DID like hearing: he was able to put the number on the calendar during circle time, he was one of the "speckled frogs" in her Five Little Speckled Frogs song, the principal made sure he got his lunch, and he is excited to go back. I'm still not sure I feel super thrilled about sending him back on Monday and am still praying that we didn't totally mess up by sending him to this school, but I guess we shall just wait and see how the next few weeks go.
And, for your viewing pleasure, here are some first day of school pics of Jack.
I think this one is adorable, even if Caroline was probably trying to get away and Jack's eyes are sort of closed. Grant was too busy playing to come take a picture.
"Cheese!"
These pictures of little kids getting onto the buses with their big backpacks make me emotional!
Speaking of emotional, before Jack left for school this morning, he set up his treasured trio looking out the window so they could see him when he came home. *sniffle*
Okay, blame it on pregnancy hormones, but this brought a little tear to my eye! Little Jack off to kindergarten - it's hard to believe. How do these little babies grow up so stinking fast and who allows this to happen? I don't even want to think about my little boy venturing off to school on a big yellow bus but I know it'll be his turn before I know it. Sniff, sniff...
